Text Link Advertising
Advertising has always been a costly affair, be it television, print, broadcast or any other medium. As internet became an integral part of mainstream media innovative advertising models appeared on the scene. A couple of most successful ones are the CPC (Cost-per-Click) based and CPM (Cost-per-thousand-impressions) based revenue models. Unlike broadcast media, which are essentially push-based marketing mechanisms, the medium of internet provides thorough measurability and accountability. The CPC and CPM based ad models exploit this by charging advertisers for tangible outcomes such as counts of clicks that happened on the advertisers’ ads or the number of times an ad was displayed on a particular page of the publisher’s site.
Ground Realities
As popularity of these measurable models increased, so did the unit cost. An improvised variation of the models could be found in bid based CPC and CPM Advertising, where the advertisers bid for unit costs depending upon popularity of publisher websites and placement within. Continuous competition ensured that the bid based prices kept on scaling making these simplistic looking models a costly affair. Add to that the occurrence of “click frauds” led to advertisers’ frustration as they kept on paying for fraudulent traffic which would never generate any RoI.
Fallout
This led to the re-emergence of subscription based models (which by far could be the simplest advertising methodology). As subscription based models demand periodic subscription payouts (e.g. monthly recurring payments) more often than not, they are static adverts which also generate substantial link equity. Being advertisements, these adverts (text ads, banner ads with description etc.) are placed on important pages of the publisher websites. Typically, these are highly valuable search engine recognized pages which pass on a portion of their search engine recognition via endorsements of advertisers. The adverts used herein vary in their nature and form and are found to have heavy reliance on text targeting as search engines can impose strict penalties against sites found violating their guidelines (e.g. open selling of PageRank by Google recognized sites).
More often than not, such advertisement opportunities are not marketed by publishers and hence it requires a prolong dialogue with them.
